He shares helpful ideas relating to maintenance equipment from the golf course superintendents he visits — as well as a few ideas of his own — with timely photos and captions that explore the changing world of golf course management. These 12 custom-made hose storage racks are made of 1/8-inch thick 8-gauge aluminum. The back baseplate measures 12 inches by 8 inches. The curved aluminum part was cut and bent into a 24-inch long by 12-inch wide piece that the hoses rest on. The 1-inch square tubing that is beneath the curve extends outward 13 inches and upward 6 inches to hold the hoses in place. Galvanized bolts measuring 9/16 inch by 2 ½ inches mount the hose racks to the wooden beams of the metal maintenance building. They have stood the test of time, and they are now 15-plus years old and counting. It took about 30 minutes to build each one and the estimated material costs were less than $25 each. The Puma shoe that upended the 1968 Olympics and threatened Adidas

For much of 1968, Tommie Smith and John Carlos were just two college sprinters; Echo Summit was just an anonymous patch of California forest; and the so-called “brush shoe” was just an unproven idea in some German cobbler’s imagination. That all changed on Sept. 12. In the preceding weeks, U.S. Olympic officials had descended upon a remote, wooded peak near Lake Tahoe and carved a massive crop circle into the untouched timberland, laying down a rubberized, all-weather track amid the 200-foot pines. Echo Summit’s elevation, 7,382 feet, was almost identical to that of Mexico City, host of the upcoming Summer Games, and so here the USOC would hold its trials. Strutting toward the starting line before the 200-meter final that September afternoon in a pair of sleek, red Pumas was the 23-year-old Carlos, whom this magazine would introduce later that month as “a goateed, jive-talking slum kid from Harlem who remembers his neighborhood as a place where kids drank cheap Scotch and who believes that at least part of his mission in life is to point up the implications of that fact to the Establishment.” Situated in lane 4, Carlos wore shoes that appeared identical to the ones that Smith, 2...

Every product is independently selected by (obsessive) editors. Things you buy through our links may earn New York a commission. Here at the Strategist, we like to think of ourselves as crazy (in the good way) about the stuff we buy, but as much as we’d like to, we can’t try everything. Which is why we have People’s Choice, in which we find the best-reviewed products and single out the most convincing ones. (You can learn more about our rating system and how we pick each item here.) And while we’ve written before about all sorts of lighting — including tips on how to rescue a rental with bad lighting, a list of energy-efficient bulbs, and a review of “trippy” mushroom-shaped night light  — here, we’ve rounded up the best LED light bulbs as praised by the most enthusiastic reviewers on Amazon. Over 2,500 purchasers give a five-star rating to this multipack of standard-sized LED bulbs from Philips. They’re available in two different color temperatures: soft white and daylight. Both have their own draw, but in general, purchasers seem to prefer the slightly brighter “daylight” bulb for general use in their homes. One reviewer explains, “We had warm or soft white incandescent bulbs...

This top-selling, high-tech razor uses like new for up to seven years — and it’s on sale now

Shaving is one of those things in life that you love to hate — especially since it involves a contraption with sharp edges that could leave you with a cut or two after. It’s taken a while, but razors have evolved into something that can fit the needs of whoever is using it, regardless of what they’re looking for in their shave. There are razors that can shave dry, razors that can be thrown away after one use and razors combined with gel to ease the experience. The technology built in razors has evolved, too. Taking them from throw-away junk to smart technological necessities. One of these technological advanced razors is the Braun Series 9, made for wet or dry shaving. A top-seller at Walmart, this razor comes with a steeper price tag than one might expect for a shaver, but all of the built-in elements make this a long-lasting, everyday necessity. “Most incredible electric I have ever owned,” wrote a customer. “So happy I spent the extra money and got the best.” An auto-sensing motor shaves more hair in one stroke than any other shaver on the market, according to the product description. In one motion, 10,000 micro vibrations occur simultaneously to capture the most hair possibl...

Cree Elder Yvonne Maurice knows what it’s like to be bullied, to struggle with drinking and

Cree Elder Yvonne Maurice knows what it’s like to be bullied, to struggle with drinking and to feel alone. Now, she uses her experiences to help teens in northern Saskatchewan. CBC Saskatchewan, CBC Manitoba and CBC North embarked on a months-long project to speak with elders, elders-in-training and youth from across their vast territories to learn how these knowledge keepers view their role today — and why they’re more critical than ever before. “I was getting wood, and at that time, there was no electricity, no running water, no nothing. I put wood in my dress, and I shoved it in the stove and my dress caught on fire,” said the 72-year-old, Cree elder, who lives in Saskatchewan’s north. “I never got a phone call, no visits, no nothing,” she said. “And then when I came home, I started getting teased by kids because of my scars.” A few years later, she married Robert, a trapper from Patuanak, a village that sits on the edge of Lac Île-à-la-Crosse, nearly 200 kilometres north of her home in Pinehouse, a primarily Métis village of around 1,000 about 500 km north of Saskatoon. She spent decades hunting and trapping on the land w...

Roku Smart Soundbar review: A simple, potent streaming combination

The Roku Smart Soundbar is a set-and-forget soundbar-slash-streamer that offers ease of use and engaging sound in a single bar design. From Netflix to Disney Plus to Apple TV Plus to HBO Max to… well, you get the idea, streaming TV is blowing up. And that means media streamers are being built into not only smart TVs but also soundbars. I was pretty disappointed in the first hybrid soundbar-streamer I saw, the JBL Link Bar, but after reviewing the capable and affordable Roku Smart Soundbar, I’m thinking it’s a worthwhile combination after all. The Smart Soundbar has been rock-solid from Day 1 of my tests. Its sound quality is very good for a subwoofer-less bar and the streaming section works as smoothly I’ve come to expect from any Roku device, running the company’s simple software to stream thousands of apps to your TV. There are some weird trade-offs made in the name of simplicity. You need to have the TV on to add Bluetooth, there are no buttons on the bar itself and the optical port doesn’t really work in any functional way. And there’s the larger issue of redundancy: Roku streamers are cheap, most new TVs are capably smart and many s...

All 2,493 US products targeted by China’s new 25% tariffs

China’s latest tariff retaliation, announced today, will hit some $60 billion in US exports, including hundreds of agricultural, mining, and manufactured products, threatening jobs and profits at companies around the United States. Before the trade war starts in earnest, China bought about 17% of US agricultural exports and was a major market for other goods, from Maine lobster to Boeing aircraft. It has been the largest market for Apple iPhones since 2016. Since the escalation of tariffs, though, China has stopped buying soybeans and lobsters, and Apple warned it would miss its expected Christmas holiday sales figures because of trade tensions. In addition to the 25% tariffs below, Beijing also added 20% tariffs on 1,078 US products, 10% tariffs on 974 US products, and 5% tariffs on 595 US products (all links in Chinese). The list was translated from China’s ministry of finance press release using Google translate, and may be inexact in spots. Quartz also rearranged some items on the list to group them into categories, and they may not be in the order of their “harmonized tariff schedule” codes. 8011 Aluminum Foil / Kitchen Foil/ Wrapping Roll Sign up for the Quartz Daily Brie...
