Denver Votes to Charge for Plastic and Paper Bags in 2020

On December 23, the Denver City Council unanimously voted to enact a $0.10 fee per each plastic or paper bag they receive from retail stores. The ordinance first passed the council earlier in December and it will now be official. Denver joins Boulder and Breckenridge in charging bag fees. Breckenridge has been charging for bags for about six years.  The law was originally proposed around a year ago by Councilwoman Kendra Black in an effort to reduce waste and encourage more people to bring their own reusable bags. According to officials, Denverites use more than 200 million bags per year and only up to 5 percent are recycled. The rest of the bags end up in the waste system, causing more harm than good. “Plastic bags wreak havoc at our landfills, recycling, and composting facilities, our oceans, and planet,” said Councilwoman Kendra Black on her Facebook page. It’s estimated that plastic bags have a life of up to 1,000 years and they often break down into smaller and smaller pieces that contaminate air, water, and more. The law will go into effect on July 1, 2020. It will be enacted in all of Denver’s retail stores, which includes grocery stores, convenie...

Rocket stove can be used as a barbecue, pizza oven or fire pit

Three Brazilian designers Eduardo Gayotto (Designer), Plinio Ruschi (Environmental Engineer) and Pedro Heldt (Architect) have joined forces to create a four-in-one rocket stove. Dubbed Noori, it comes complete with a barbecue grill, pizza oven and fire pit. After two years of designing and testing the components of the prototype, the team added a few additional accessories before recently launching it on the market. “Noori is inspired by the rocket stove system, a wood burning stove that maximizes wood combustion through its proportion (1 x opening 2 x length 3 x height) and the airflow,” Eduardo Gayotto tells New Atlas. “It’s widespread in permaculture. That’s the core of our product, and by following its proportions, we’ve added the other functions, BBQ grill, pizza oven, fire pit.” The Noori rocket stove’s body is made from refractory concrete, in order to maintain heat and protect the exterior when in contact with metal. The system and lid are made from enameled steel and grates are made from enameled cast iron. The tripod is made from carbon steel with an electrostatic finish and is fitted with three industrial wheels, two with brakes; and finally t...

Trump’s latest tariffs would tax nearly every Chinese import to the U.S. - Axios close icon Mobile toggle main menu Axios Mobile toggle complementary sections Search Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on LinkedIn Copy permalink to your clipboard

If Trump’s Thursday tariff expansion takes hold on September 1, it would result in the U.S. taxing nearly every Chinese product sent to America. Where it stands: Expect higher prices on consumer items like “clothing, toys, home goods, and electronics,” according to the Retail Industry Leaders Association. 62% of items hit by Trump’s tariffs on the remaining $300 billion of U.S. imports from China are consumer goods, according to Goldman Sachs — “much higher than earlier levies that targeted industrial components,” per the Washington Post. The bottom line: There is still time for the U.S. and China to reach another trade cease-fire before these tariffs take effect, but as Bill Bishop of Sinocism notes, China is unlikely to cave on Trump’s demands over the next month. On Farming YouTube, Emu Eggs and Hay Bales Find Loyal Fans

Some farmers have discovered that online stardom can be more lucrative than their crops or livestock. “We’re going to be hauling some grass and some alfalfa bales today,” Cole Sonne cheerfully tells the camera as he drives a tractor over the bumps of his family’s farm in South Dakota. And for the next 12 minutes, the video will show Sonne and his dad do just that, carefully moving hundreds of the bundles, each as tall as a person, across their property. The sun shines down on the farm’s lush grass, peaceful music plays in the background—the effect is soothing. The work, though, is monotonous. It wouldn’t be unfair to call it boring. Sonne’s fans love it: The bale-hauling video has been viewed over 100,000 times on YouTube since it was posted in July. Sonne is a college student, and works on the same land that his grandfather did with his uncle and father. Last year, he started a YouTube channel dedicated to the farm, which has since amassed over 30,000 followers. “A lot of times when people hear about what I do or I tell them, they get a dumbfounded look and ask, ‘People watch that?’” says Sonne, who earned roughly $650 from YouTube advertisements last month. YouTube is ho...

Six firefighters injured in four-alarm Brooklyn blaze

A 4-alarm fire destroyed an air conditioning company warehouse in Sunset Park, Brooklyn Wednesday morning, resulting in six firefighter injuries, fire officials said. Smoke could be seen for miles, as firefighters battled the warehouse fire that comprised several large storage garages filled with air conditioning equipment, PVC electrical conduit and wires, and tanks of compressed air for the air conditioners, said Assistant Chief John Hodgens. The fire broke out shortly before 9 a.m. at 265 45th St. in the air conditioning warehouse, the name written in Chinese lettering, officials said. Chief Hodgens said smoke was pouring out from under the steel gate and when firefighters opened the door, they found a crowded building with air conditioning equipment stocked to the ceiling. Firefighters struggled to get to the seat of the fire, which spread from the first to the second floors of the structure, Chief Hodgens said. At the height of the fire, there were 38 units and 168 firefighters and EMS personnel on scene. Chief Hodgens said all of the six firefighters injured were minor and taken to local hospitals. Hazardous materials firefighters were also called to the scene to mitigate ...

Feeling stressed, need some time out or just want to bask in the sun’s rays? Hammocks

Feeling stressed, need some time out or just want to bask in the sun’s rays? Hammocks are a fun way to lounge outdoors, while gently swinging yourself to sleep. First developed in the jungles of South America where they were used for sleeping above the wet ground, hammocks have come on leaps and bounds in the style stakes since then. Made from fabric, netting or rope, they were designed to be tied between two trees, but these days many come with their own stands – and, if not, the stands are easily available to buy separately.  Singular options are great if it’s just for you, but there are also double and family designs available, too – plus ones with cushions, canopies and all manner of shapes and sizes. Swinging chairs, tent and even bed styles are all the rage and are growing in popularity as dreamy napping nooks for indoors as much as out. Then there are the portable options, which are ideal for taking away with you – and they’re not limited to tropical destinations, either! If you’re off camping then choose a model that’s light to carry and just as easy to pack away as it is to put up. Hammocks with spreaders are a modern invention, designed to spread the weight load more e...
